Renewable Energy Training Center

Our History

Since 2009, SUNY Morrisville's Renewable Energy Training Center (RETC) has provided and hosted dozens of technical courses and workshops in renewable energy that address employer-identified skill gaps and needs. Over the past decade, the RETC has worked closely with employers, training providers, economic development partners, and K-12 schools to address long-term and short-term needs of New York State's renewable energy sector, providing training across a range of technical topics including wind, solar, micro hydro, heat pumps, bioenergy/biofuels, and tower climbing safety and rescue. These efforts resulted in the development of comprehensive college-level coursework (>20 renewable energy college courses) and two unique degree programs in Renewable Energy at SUNY Morrisville!

Our Future

In response to growing industry needs for trained workers, the RETC is currently developing new partnerships and training opportunities aimed at meeting employer needs and serving underrepresented populations. These workforce development efforts are focused on providing a range of training and certification opportunities in multiple formats to accommodate a broader audience and offering them at the SUNY Morrisville campus and through a network of training partners across central New York.

The RETC is now housed at SUNY Morrisville’s newly constructed (2021) Agriculture and Clean Energy Technology Center, which includes six dedicated indoor renewable energy labs with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, as well as on-site solar and wind energy production systems. These renewable energy facilities and systems provide an unmatched opportunity for hands-on technical training.

Opportunities for You

Individuals seeking continuing education in renewable energy can enroll in one of our RENG college courses by using the registration form from the Center for Lifelong Learning, or enrolling in one of the RE degree programs. Additional opportunities for training and certification will be offered in the near future (stay tuned!).
