Academic Honor Societies

Honor societies celebrate the academic accomplishments of students and provide opportunities for professional development, civic engagement, leadership, networking, and more. SUNY Morrisville is proud to be home to six honor societies.

Collegewide honor societies

Chi Alpha Sigma

Chi Alpha Sigma

Chi Alpha Sigma is the first and only academic honor society specifically recognizing four-year collegiate student-athletes at NCAA, NAIA or NCCAA institutions for their athletic and academic successes.  Chi Alpha Sigma’s local chapter, Alpha Lambda, was established in 2019.

The mission of Chi Alpha Sigma is to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime.

Selection for membership is by an athletic department designee in consultation with the student's head coach and is based on outstanding scholarship, earned athletic letter winner, and excellent character and citizenship. To be considered for memberships, a student-athlete must:

  • receive a varsity letter in their sport.
  • achieve junior academic standing or higher after their fifth full time semester.
  • earn a 3.4 or higher cumulative grade point average.

Student-athletes who compete for a collegiate club team are also eligible if the club team is overseen by the athletics department of the local chapter.

Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for high-achieving student scholars of all majors in certificate, associate and bachelor degree programs.  The SUNY Morrisville chapter of PTK, Lambda Xi, was established in 1961.

The mission of PTK is to recognize academic achievement of college students and provide opportunities for individual growth through participation in scholarship, leadership, fellowship, and service.  It achieves its mission through on-line curriculum for professional development and skill-building; on-campus leadership, civic engagement, and personal development opportunities; scholarships for associate, bachelor, and master studies; and more.

Membership is open to part-time and full-time students who:

  • are enrolled in a certificate, associate or bachelor program.
  • have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of credit through SUNY Morrisville.
  • have a minimum grade point of average of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.

Alpha Phi Sigma

Alpha Phi Sigma

Alpha Phi Sigma recognizes academic excellence of undergraduate and graduate students of Criminal Justice, as well as Juris Doctor students. Alpha Phi Sigma is the only Criminal Justice Honor Society, is a certified member of the Association of College Honor Societies, and is affiliated with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

The goals of Alpha Phi Sigma are to honor and promote academic excellence, community service, educational leadership, and unity.

Membership is open to students in bachelor programs who:

  • have declared a major, minor or equivalent in the criminal justice or related field
  • have completed 45 semester hours
  • have a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 in courses in criminal justice related fields
  • rank in the top 35% of their class
  • have a minimum of four courses of the above course work in the criminal justice field

Students who completed an associate degree in Criminal Justice and are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s program, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale are eligible for membership.

Delta Mu Delta

Delta Mu Delta

Delta Mu Delta is an international honor society for business programs accredited by ACBSP (the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs) at the baccalaureate, graduate and doctoral levels.

Delta Mu Delta’s mission is to recognize and encourage academic excellence of students at qualifying colleges and universities to create a DMD community that fosters the well-being of its individual members and the business community through life-time membership.

Membership is open to students who:

  • have completed five eights or more of the work required for a bachelor degree.
  • have a cumulative grade point average of one-quarter (.25) of a step above a B, or better, and who are in the top 20% of their college class in cumulative average grades.
  • Students must have 24 semester hours of residency unless transferring from an institution where there is a chapter of Delta Mu Delta or is eligible to have a chapter due to appropriate ACBSP accreditation. 
Kappa Beta Delta

Kappa Beta Delta

Kappa Beta Delta honors high-achieving students in associate degree business schools accredited by ACBSP, the Accreditation Council for Business Schools & Programs.

The purpose of the Society is to encourage and recognize scholarship and accomplishment among students of business pursuing associate degrees and to encourage and promote personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind.

Membership is open to students who:

  • rank in the upper 20% of students pursuing business degrees at the time of invitation to membership.
  • have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of credit, of which a minimum of six are in business subjects toward the degree program.
  • have a minimum grade point of average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Sigma Beta Delta

Sigma Beta Delta

Sigma Beta Delta recognizes students who have attained superior records in business programs in schools and colleges with regional accreditation.

The mission of Sigma Beta Delta is to encourage and recognize scholarship and accomplishment among students of business, management and administration, and to encourage and promote aspirations toward personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind.

Membership is open to students who:

  • rank in the upper 20% of students pursuing business degrees at the time of invitation to membership.
  • at least one-half of the degree program in which they are enrolled.
  •  transfer students who meet the qualifications for membership may be inducted after they have completed a minimum of one term of work in the department, college, or school of business in which the chapter is located, provided their overall record, in the judgment of the collegiate chapter, is of Sigma Beta Delta caliber
